Anthony Joshua is closer than ever to retiring from boxing based on his post-fight press conference according to Darren Stanton, ‘the human lie detector’ and a world-leading expert in deception and body language.

Speaking to OLBG, Stanton picked out some key moments from Joshua’s performance after the fight that rang alarm bells over his future.

“It was a very sterile, very stoic performance. When he talked about quitting or retiring there was no passion with his statements. There were a couple of things that concern me in terms of being deceptive.

“When someone asked him whether he’s quitting he said no I’m not quitting – we call that a contraction, or parroting. People tend to parrot the language of someone else. It’s not so much lying but a linguistic deflection.

“When someone catches us unawares with a question they may mirror the language back to them to buy themselves a few seconds.

“When someone asked will he carry on he came back and said of course he’ll carry on, so there’s something there – so yes, I do believe, by the true definition of the word, he was being deceptive.”

According to Stanton, Joshua is likely thinking about hanging up his gloves after his defeat to fellow British heavyweight Daniel Dubois.

“He’s not about to quit imminently but it’s something on the cards,” added Stanton. “It’s on the agenda.

“Basically, by mirroring the language, the lack of authenticity, no real passion in his words like there usually is, and his vocal tone being monosyllabic, it was very stale, and he usually speaks from the heart. Overall I do think there’s an issue there. Anthony Joshua was not being authentic.”

IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois wants to face Anthony Joshua in the boxing ring again,

‘Dynamite’ and ‘AJ’ faced off last month at Wembley Stadium in London, England. For Daniel Dubois, the fight was his first defense of IBF heavyweight gold, having won the title with a June knockout over Filip Hrgovic. Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua entered the ring fresh off his knockout victory over Francis Ngannou in March.

Despite the challenger entering the ring a heavy betting favorite, he was dominated early. Daniel Dubois knocked down Anthony Joshua repeatedly in the early rounds of the contest, but the ex-champion found new life in round five. ‘AJ’ hurt ‘Dynamite’ badly with a right hand early in the frame. However, Dubois quickly found his own counter, knocking out Joshua with a short hook.

For Daniel Dubois, the knockout victory was validation that he was truly among the heavyweight division’s elite. Post-fight, Anthony Joshua called for a rematch with the IBF champion, but some speculated that he could fight someone else. ‘AJ’ had no contractual right to order a rematch with Dubois to begin with.

Heavyweight boxing champion Daniel Dubois calls for rematch with Anthony Joshua

However, Daniel Dubois would love to face the British heavyweight again. Speaking in a recent interview with Seconds Out, the champion was asked about a potential rematch with Anthony Joshua. There, Dubois confirmed that the bout would be next and that he also enjoyed the first firefight with ‘AJ’.

“If he wants it, I want it too. I was the better man on the night but there’s no disrespect.” Daniel Dubois stated in the interview, when asked about fighting Anthony Joshua again. “I’m not gonna badmouth him or anything, it was a great fight and if we can do it again it’ll be even bigger.” (h/t Michael Benson)

He continued, “No-one said it was gonna be easy. I had to slay the king so I had to come through whatever fire he was bringing at me. I love those sort of match-ups where we’re just letting our hands go, back and forth, roll the dice, gun slinging. It was really exciting for me to be honest.”

What do you make of these comments from the boxing champion? Do you want to see Daniel Dubois vs. Anthony Joshua 2?

Even at the highest level, not even an army of referees and TV cameras could detect every little infringement among 120 competitors, across 200 acres of land.

It becomes even more important at lower levels – when your playing partner draws a bad lie and realises nobody is looking – or disappears into the woods unattended and suddenly finds their lost ball.

But while golfers are generally expected to have a detailed understanding of the rules and hold each other to account, they do have their own version of VAR, too.

In professional tournaments, rules officials are on hand to help players avoid controversy and offer guidance in difficult situations.

It is usually a pretty quiet day at the office. But for Orlando Pope, working at the Phoenix Open in 1999, it was anything but.

He gave Tiger Woods a ruling which was discussed on that year’s Super Bowl broadcast – and it still gets widely circulated on social media, 25 years later.

You could say it rocked the golf world – quite literally – because the ruling involved a 2,000lb boulder.

It all started when Woods – playing in the final group on Sunday alongside Rocco Mediate – pulled a tee shot into the Scottsdale desert on the 13th hole.

His ball cannoned off a giant rock and came to rest a short distance behind it.

There was no way to advance the ball forwards – even for the greatest golfer of all-time – but Woods quickly thought up a bizarre escape plan.

Golfers are allowed to move ‘loose impediments’ – any object that is not attached to the golf course and not in direct contact with the ball.

It is usually used to get rid of twigs and leaves around the golf ball, but Woods applied it to a one-ton boulder.

Reflecting on the situation in a 2023 interview, rules official Pope said: “I pulled up in my cart and asked about the situation. Tiger Woods pointed to this boulder and said it is just lying there. I asked him, ‘What do you mean … it’s just lying there?’

“Tiger said he thought it was decorative and it wasn’t attached, it was a loose impediment. I’ve got to give him credit. Looking back I would have never thought about asking for that ruling.

“Tiger then asked if he could move it and I said yes.

“Tiger thought for a moment, then asked if he could have help. I responded, ‘You can have all the help you want.'”

Then, in a totally unprecedented scene, Woods’ caddie Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan called over about a dozen fans to move the boulder.

At first, the men were unable to shift it, before they all coordinated their efforts to a ‘count of three’.

Woods smiled as his army of labourers heaved the boulder out of his way, and when one of them asked if that was sufficient, he replied: “Do it again.”

They obliged – and suddenly Woods had a clear route to the green.

The American shook hands with each helper, ripped his second shot into a greenside bunker, then got up-and-down for the most remarkable birdie.

Tiger Woods

Woods would finish three shots adrift of Mediate, who won the tournament on 11-under-par, but that did not stop the chaotic incident gaining widespread attention.

Ken Venturi, tour veteran and broadcaster, was adamant on TV commentary that Woods should not have been given the ruling.

Pope added: “I had no idea it would be as big as it was.

“I went into the clubhouse and Ben Nelson of our team asked me if I was sure about the ruling. I said I was 100% sure.

“The Super Bowl was telecast by CBS right after the final round. It was brought up during that broadcast.”

Pope, who is now senior director of TV rules and video analyst for the PGA Tour, revealed he still gets pestered about the ruling to this day.

“A couple of times the ruling has come up for discussion,” he added.

“One is at the PGA Tour rules seminar. I get attacked with questions on why I made the ruling I did.

“Second, when we bring in new staff, they ask about it during orientation, because it is usually included in one of the slides.

“The biggest question asked is about the pace of play, since Woods and Mediate got behind on the clock.

“My answer has always been the same: ‘It takes a long time to move a 2,000-pound rock.’”

Woods, who was 23 at the time, was already becoming one of the most famous athletes in the world – but the boulder also claimed its place in history.

It can still be found at Scottsdale, with a commemorative plaque on its side, which reads: “1999 Phoenix Open: On January 31, during the fourth round, Tiger Woods’ tee shot came to rest in proximity to this 1-ton boulder. After being ruled a ‘loose impediment,’ a group of spectators moved the boulder, allowing Woods to birdie the hole.”

Let’s get this out of the way right from the jump: Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time. Not Jack Nicklaus, not Sam Snead and not … Jason Day?

This week, the 2015 PGA champion joined Smylie Kaufman’s podcast ‘The Smylie Show’ to chat about his career. In the episode, Day spoke about his intense fitness regime in his prime, explaining how the “lifestyle choice” led him down a spiral of injury and recovery, not altogether unlike Tiger Woods. Speaking of Woods, Day also shared the eyebrow-raising compliment (?) his former Nike teammate used to give him, and let’s just say it might be the hottest take in golf history. Check it out.

That’s right. When Day would ask Woods, “What kept you at number one for so long?,” Woods would reply, “I’m not as talented as you, so I had to work harder.”

Tiger Woods

For such a short quote, there’s a lot to unpack here. First of all, Woods’ claim’ that Jason Day was more a naturally gifted golfer than him is absolutely ludicrous. Even Day called it “a load of crap.” In fact, the claim is so dubious that we almost wonder if it was a head game designed to get Day—who was at the peak of his powers at the time—to let his guard down.

Then there’s Woods’ assertion that he was a more dominant golfer than Day purely because of his graft. We all know Woods’ work ethic and dedication are second to none, but to claim right Day’s face that he worked a full 69 wins harder might be the backhanded compliment of the century. It also completely ignores the preternatural gifts Woods, and many Hall of GOATs inductees like him, were born with.

But that’s how all the greats—from Tom Brady to Muhammad Ali—have operated through the years. They carry a chip on their shoulder at all times. They back themselves into mental corners just so they can fight their way out. They always believe there’s more work to be done even when they’re already the best. In fact, in a strange way, this brief quote reveals more about the psyche of Tiger Woods than any documentary, interview or stat could ever hope to.

He’s taking a break from playing golf right now! Yes, the 14-time major champ is currently recovering from a surgery that he had recently to fix his back. But… frankly speaking… He’s Tiger Woods. Keeping him away from the sport as a whole is, in fact, an impossible thing. And unsurprisingly enough, that didn’t stop him from dropping a tease of his own with a Pebble Beach twist.

The official handle of Sun Day Red recently shared a tweet on X. “Tiger Woods and Pebble Beach are forever linked,” it wrote before adding, “The legacy grows October 11.” Suffice it to say, the post went ahead and created much hype in the community. And as a result of the same, TWLEGION, a fan page dedicated to the golfer reshared the tweet all the while trying to figure out what it meant.

“Guessing this is a merch collab between SDR and Pebble,” wrote the golfer’s fan page on X while alluding to how his brand would make a collaboration with the iconic course. “Tiger has the TW Invitational next week and the Junior event this weekend – not clear if he’s attending those with recovery from the recent surgery.” While the possible collab might happen on one side, the Pebble Beach resorts will witness both tournaments kicking off in these two weeks with the TGR Jr Invitational teeing off from October 12.

The TW Invitational, on the other hand, will see everyone arriving from October 14, Monday onwards with the participants teeing off at the iconic course from 1:00 p.m. in a shotgun start. The next two days will witness the final two rounds being played as well, but there will be a slight change. Well, the second round will see the golfers teeing it off in a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. while Wednesday it will start at 8:30 p.m.

But the question remains; will Tiger Woods himself be attending both the events? The most probable answer would be a ‘No’, courtesy of the recent procedure. Much to everyone’s surprise, the athlete had recently undergone surgery on his lower back. He had been riddled with back spasms for a while now and, as a result, he underwent his sixth lower back surgery in 10 years. Quite unfortunate, isn’t it? Yes, none would disagree!

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods’s surgery and his plans for 2024

A tweet was shared on September 14 mentioning how the 48-year-old had undergone microdecompression surgery of the lumbar spine. It was done so to remedy the impingement of one of the nerves in his lower back. “The surgery went smoothly,” shared the golfer in a statement. “And I’m hopeful this will help alleviate the back spasms and pain I was experiencing throughout most of the 2024 season.”

That’s not all. the 15-time major champion also took to express hope in recovering as soon as possible from the same. He said,  “I look forward to tackling this rehab and preparing myself to get back to normal life activities, including golf.” That, interestingly, brings us to the next query. When will he make a possible return?

If everything goes well and Tiger Woods recovers, then you might be able to spot him on the greens at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Orlando as well as in Albany, Bahamas. His fans would hope for a return, but only after he recovers completely. Here’s to hoping!!

The Olympic gymnast has had an exciting comeback, and it didn’t stop at the Olympics.

Olympics gymnast Sunisa “Suni” Lee is having a hell of a comeback year, and meeting another powerful woman has made it all the more exciting.

Tonight, at Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year Awards — where she was one of the women given the honor — Lee met Beyoncé, and to say that she was fangirling would be an understatement. In a clip taken from the awards ceremony, Lee and Bey are seen chatting, and Lee can barely keep her composure. The words exchanged in the conversation are unclear, but it sounds like the conversation was fulfilling for both ladies.

Shortly after, the two posed for a photo shared to Lee’s Instagram Story. Lee was wearing a glimmering silver long-sleeved dress, will Bey was wearing a fabulous shirt-and-long-skirt combo, cinched with a large belt.

Suni Lee

This past summer, Lee won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the team all-around event. This marked her second gold medal win, after winning a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Games in the women’s all-around.

She announced her retirement in March 2023 after being diagnosed with a kidney disease. She returned to gymnasitcs in August 2023, making her comeback to elite gymnastics at the 2023 U.S. Classic.

In an interview with Glamour, Lee revealed that she hasn’t thought much about making an Olympic return for the 2028 games in Los Angeles. But if she does, she doesn’t want there to be a hero’s journey narrative surrounding her as she competes.

“I don’t think I would want there to be a huge story,” Suni said. “I’d just want to work my butt off in the gym every single day and get everything that I deserved at the Olympics. You know? It shouldn’t be deeper than that.”

Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has explained the “calculated” reason why his fighter may take a rematch with Daniel Dubois next.

Joshua was dropped several times by Dubois en route to a knockout loss in September, as the latter retained the IBF heavyweight title at Wembley Stadium.

It was suggested after the fight that Joshua has a rematch clause, although some fans and pundits have advised “AJ” not to face his fellow Briton next. Hearn, however, has lifted the lid on Joshua’s thinking.

“My initial thought after the fight was: ‘Let’s just chill out, maybe wait for Fury vs Usyk,’” Hearn told Sky Sports, referencing the heavyweight title rematch between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, scheduled for 21 December.

“AJ’s reaction was quite a bit different. Obviously, out of pride, you always want to take the rematch – but it’s a little bit more calculated than that.

“It’s more like: Well, what happens if Usyk vs Fury doesn’t happen? What if someone gets injured? And even if it does happen, they’re not going to fight again until July, August. Then [Joshua thinks]: ‘I’m out the ring for nearly a year, and I want to be active.’

“[Joshua thinks]: ‘I want to win the world heavyweight title, and I’ve got a shot there to win the world heavyweight title in my hand. Obviously it’s a dangerous fight [against Dubois], but I can’t box any worse than I did.’”

Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois

Hearn added: “When you start actually thinking about it, I don’t think there’s a bad decision to make. I know that he is leaning towards the rematch, because he wants to win the world heavyweight title – versus fighting [Deontay] Wilder, waiting for Fury, and then you’ve got all next year bubbling around, not really fighting for the world heavyweight title.

“If it’s solely down to AJ, which it will be at the end of the day, I think it’s going to be very hard to talk him out of taking the rematch.”

The situation could be complicated, however, by the news that the IBF has ordered a title eliminator between Martin Bakole and Agit Kabayel.

The winner of that fight would theoretically be Dubois’s next challenger, unless Joshua faces the champion in good time.

Why is there always a buzz around heavyweights? The sheer power, flying punches, exciting action, and brutal knockouts remain a constant theme. IBF has ensured fans witness two hard-hitting heavyweights, as they fight it out to punch a golden ticket to face Daniel Dubois next. However, it might rob fans of another thrilling encounter, as it could potentially derail Anthony Joshua’s plans.

Notably, the IBF has ordered a title eliminator between Martin Bakole and Agit Kabayel to determine who will challenge ‘Dynamite’ next for his IBF strap. While Bakole, 31, brushed aside Frank Sanchez in his last fight, Kabayel, 32, turned in the best performance of his career after he knocked out Jared Anderson. Their last respective wins had ensured the two moved up in the IBF hierarchy and looked to challenge for the title next.

TalkSports’ Michael Benson turned to his X handle and revealed this development to the fans. He wrote, “The IBF has ordered an eliminator between Martin Bakole and Agit Kabayel to determine a mandatory challenger to heavyweight titleholder Daniel Dubois. Really good matchup; both coming off career-best performances. Bakole is ESPN’s No. 7 heavyweight while Kabayel is No. 8.”

ANTHONY JOSHUA

There is no concrete timeline yet for their fight but Bakole’s promoter Ben Shalom recently disclosed his intentions to get a date in December. The details are yet to be chalked out and it might not take time, given that getting a fight date early will only diminish ‘AJ’s chances of securing an immediate rematch with Dubois. But that’s a fight where the money will be, for the fighters and the promoters.

Anthony Joshua insists on Daniel Dubois rematch

Eddie Hearn admitted that Joshua, 34, was leaning towards the rematch to win the heavyweight title. Alternatively, he could fight Deontay Wilder or other top names in the division as the British boxer continued to wait for the result of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury. If Uysk vs. Fury is detailed, then Joshua, at 28-4, would have to wait longer for a fight.

But Dubois, 27, won’t be available till February too. So, waiting for a rematch could affect Joshua’s activity levels, especially when he has entered the twilight years of his boxing career. Hearn, 45, declared, “If it’s solely down to AJ, which it will be at the end of the day. I think it’s going to be very hard to talk him out of taking the rematch.” It remains to be seen how the IBF title eliminator and Usyk vs. Fury pan out and how these fights affect the Dubois vs. Joshua rematch.

What do you make of this coming fight between Martin Bakole and Agit Kabayel? Do you think it will affect Daniel Dubois’ rematch with Anthony Joshua? Let us know in the comments below.

Iga Swiatek’s coaching change has come as a surprise to many including members of the Tennis Podcast.

The 23-year-old has not featured on the WTA Tour since the US Open quarter-finals and her team will look different when she does make a return to action.

Tennis pundit discusses Iga Swiatek splitting with coach Tomasz Wiktorowski

Iga Swiatek form somewhat dipped after winning her fourth French Open title in June.

She suffered another early exit from Wimbledon and claimed the bronze medal at the Olympic Games, despite being the heavy favourite for the gold medal.

After making the Cincinnati Open semi-finals she exited Flushing Meadows at the last eight stage, and decided it was time for a change.

The timing of the announcement was an interesting one, and many were left surprised by the decision, including The Tennis Podcast’s David Law.

“I don’t know whether this was on the cards whether they decided between them that three years is enough or maybe he’s burnt out, but why wouldn’t you wait just until the end of your year to do this rather than have to miss tournaments,” he said.

“It does feel like it’s come a bit out of the blue. I know she hasn’t won everything she’s wanted to this year but she still had some significant success.

Iga Swiatek

“To make a change like this when you’re still not at the end of the season and then taking tournaments out in order to find your new coach and work things out, that is a bit of a surprise to me.”

Will Iga Swiatek play again before the WTA Finals?

Swiatek has secured her place at the season-ending WTA Finals, and she is the only player to do so along with Aryna Sabalenka so far.

But given her previous announcements, there is a chance she may not play again until the season concludes in Riyadh this November.

Swiatek is the WTA Finals defending champion after the Pole won the event for the first time in 2023 when it was hosted in Cancun, Mexico.

Should the five-time Grand Slam winner compete, she will aim to become the eighth woman to successfully defend the WTA Finals crown.

Iga Swiatek‘s shocking coaching split has left fans wondering what’s next. The highly successful partnership between the WTA star and Tomasz Wiktorowski concluded after the former bagged four Grand Slam titles, among other accolades, under the Polish coach’s tutelage. With updates on hiring a suitable replacement still lacking, a French journalist has reflected on the potential reason behind the Pole’s surprising decision.

Let’s not kid ourselves—the competitiveness of the WTA Tour isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. While players’ stress can be managed off-court, gaining better insight into improving mental fortitude always takes priority. (Drumroll)—enter mental coaches. These individuals are exclusively equipped to guide athletes in better compartmentalizing high-octane emotions when competing on the circuit. Noting their monumental contributions to the sporting world, journalist Remi Bourrieres showered high praise upon Swiatek’s mental coach.

Talking to ‘Sport.pl’ for an interview, Bourrieres highlighted key details surrounding Swiatek’s psychologist, Daria Abramovich. Later, the Frenchman outlined Abramovich’s pivotal role in the Pole’s training, suggesting that the duo’s constructive chemistry could have caused the World No. 1 to drift away from Tomasz Wiktorowski as a coach. For those unaware, the young talent has often relied on her psychologist’s expertise. Notably, her former coach also emphasized the importance of mental wellness and recovery during their partnership.

Iga Swiatek

He said, “Daria Abramovich has a good image in France, where she is perceived solely as a mental coach. In France, we have a growing admiration for good mental coaches, because we know that this is an area where French tennis players need to improve. Perhaps her role has grown a lot in recent months and maybe this has started to weigh on Tomasz. I have seen quite a few interviews with Daria in the French media, less with Tomasz.”

However, the Pole bid adieu to her ex-coach with full honors. The duo parted ways amicably, with Swiatek heaping praise upon Wiktorowski’s efforts and guidance during their fruitful journey.

Iga Swiatek credits former coach Tomasz Wiktorowski for guiding her to glory

Polish superstar Iga Swiatek ended her successful run with Tomasz Wiktorowski merely a fortnight ago. While experts like Barbara Schett validated the Pole’s decision, lamenting over Swiatek’s underwhelming results outside of the French Open, the World No. 1 paid her dues to Wiktorowski in full.
