American boxer Claressa Shields, the undisputed world champion in three weight classes, has been suspended and is under investigation after testing positive for marijuana following her victory over heavyweight Danielle Perkins in Michigan.

The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission suspended the 29-year-old athlete from competing in the state after an ‘oral fluid sample’ taken after the fight on Feb. 2 showed the presence of marijuana, which is banned in competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

“Ms. Shields’ conduct as a licensed professional boxer constitutes an immediate threat to the integrity of professional boxing, the public interest and the welfare and safety of professional athletes,” the Michigan Commission said on Thursday.

The World Boxing Organization (WBO), which does not have the authority to suspend boxers, has requested a “show notice” from Shields to provide an explanation. The Michigan Commission is also conducting its own investigation to determine if disciplinary action is necessary.

Shields, the only boxer to hold every major world title — WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO — in three weight classes and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, took to social media last week posting, “Clean athletes win.”

Under the World Boxing Council Clean Boxing Program, both Shields and Perkins have been tested by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).

Marijuana is banned in-competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).

American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson missed the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after receiving a one-month ban following a positive drugs test for marijuana.

The WBO, which is a sanctioning body and does not have the power to suspend boxers, has requested a “show notice” from Shields, asking her to explain herself, while the Michigan Commission has opened its own investigation into whether she should face disciplinary action.

“Ms Shields’ conduct as a licensed professional boxer constitutes an imminent threat to the integrity of professional boxing, the public interest, and the welfare and safety of professional athletes,” the Michigan Commission said.

Last week, Shields addressed rumours of a failed drugs test on social media, saying she was a “clean athlete”.

BBC Sport has contacted Shields for comment.

Boxer Claressa Shields' Long Fight for Olympic Glory - ABC News

Under the WBC’s clean boxing programme, Shields and Perkins would have been subject to drug testing by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (Vada).

Shields won gold at the Olympics aged 17 and has won titles in multiple weights as a professional boxer.

She is undefeated in 16 fights and was the first boxer, male or female, to win undisputed titles in three different weights in the four-belt era.

Claressa Shields had enough. The American boxer has come to the aid of Travis Hunter after the online hate left the NFL star devastated. It even pushed him to delete his Instagram handle to protect his girlfriend. While there has been no word about the decision, he could have done it to escape the negativity. The whole incident has left many fans and pros seething with anger and frustration, and ‘GWOAT’ is no different.

It all started when the fans tore apart Leanna Lenee for her behavior at the Heisman Trophy ceremony. The fans saw her stay seated while the whole crowd stood up and applauded Hunter as he collected the Heisman trophy. The situation didn’t change even when Deion Sanders, the Buffaloes head coach, nudged her. After that, Lenee gave Hunter a brief hug before taking her seat again. This drew a lot of flak from the hardcore fans, and the scathing criticism didn’t stop.

Shields, 29, took to her X handle and took the Buffaloes star’s side. She blasted the fans for meddling with the lovely couple’s life and even pushed Hunter to the brink of deleting his Instagram account. She wrote, “This why I go off on y’all and hurt yall feelings! Why tf are you y’all trolling TRAVIS HUNTER for! Leave him tf alone! If he love the girl let him love her! Always in other mfs business! He too nice to yall a**! Mind yall MF’N business! Done made him deactivate his damn Instagram!”

The two-time undisputed champion then issued a warning to the hate-spitting fans. She continued, “I hate anybody who said something to him! Everybody not cut for that sh*t! Go accomplish something instead of being mean to athletes and celebrities! Stg I wanna break yall damn fingers !”

Hunter himself had addressed the whole situation when he appeared in a Twitch stream and expressed his frustration. This was before he even decided to take a break from social media and keep himself and his fiancee away from the online hate.

Travis Hunter: telling the world the emotional turmoil Leanna Lenee going through

In the Twitch stream, the 21-year-old told his viewers that Lenee had slept after crying and resorting to drinking alcohol. He added how he didn’t want to disturb her sleep after all the troubles she was going through. He declared, “I know what I got. I know my girl. My girl’s been with me for five years. Y’all are just now starting to talk about me and just now starting to be with me. Come on, man.”

Lenee herself had tried to put up a defense for herself as she took on TikTok to share her side of the story. She said, “People are saying that I’m like, ‘What am I supposed to do? Just sit here?’ That’s not what I said, first of all.” She then detailed how fans were making wrong interpretations of a 7-second-long video. She also admitted she was taking pictures and talking to the fans. It might take a while for the two to escape the online windstorm.

Claressa Shields Backs Lil Yachty’s $400,000 Attack on “Ungrateful” Best Friend

A lot has gone down in the past few days, and now it seems rapper and singer Lil Yachty has had enough of his friend and podcast co-host MitchGoneMad. Yachty felt betrayed after a viral clip surfaced where he questioned Mitch’s success, asking where he would be without the backing of someone famous like him. Interestingly, heavyweight champion Claressa Shields has publicly sided with Yachty, agreeing with his perspective. But why?

In case you were living under a rock for the past week, here’s what went down. During the August 21st episode of ‘A Safe Place Podcast’ featuring Key Glock, the trio spoke about what advice they would give to Glock if he had to start over. While Mitch suggested he would think things through, Lil Yachty reminded Mitch where he would have ended up if it weren’t for him and his popularity.

[If] I was never in your life, what would you have been doing?” asked the rapper. This part of the clip was later shared on social media with people claiming Yachty publically disrespected his friend, but Lil Yachty seems to have taken offense to his friend and co-host Mitch, not defending him after the clip went viral. To put things into perspective, the podcast was started in June 2023 and has since seen a quick rise to fame, with guest appearances from Saweetie, Kai Cenat, J. Cole, ScHoolboy Q, and Veeze.

Regardless, Yachty hopped on an Instagram Live Session on August 22nd to highlight that the podcast was started just to shine a light on Mitch’s talent. “I said, ‘Alright, you know what? I’ma give you a platform. I’ma find someone to sponsor us. ‘We gon’ make a podcast, and I’ma show people how funny you are, I’ma show people how crazy you are, I’ma show you how cool you are.’ I [didn’t want to do a] motherf**king podcast, n**ga. I’m a motherf**king rapper,” Yachty said dismally.

He further added, “I put $400,000 in Mitch’s pocket, and y’all [are] sitting here talking about, ‘He’s disrespecting his friend’.” When Yachty’s rant on Instagram started gaining traction, Claressa Shields reacted to it stating, “A lot of celebs deal with s**t like this on the daily, ungrateful mfs!” However, things didn’t end there! After Yachty’s fiery response, Mitch seems to have responded to the drama.

Despite Lil Yachty rant, Mitch claims the next episode will be epic

The next day on August 23rd, Mitch finally took X, writing, “[I am] [skull emoji] the next podcast will be epic ion even think we need a guest this time lol.. see ya around.” In a later post on the same day, Mitch claimed he has never been anybody’s “lil bro,” asking people to take a look at his background because he “[I] had stats before [I] met bro and got even more now.”

In yet another post, Mitch claimed everyone who knows him knows that he has put in the work to get to where he is today. However, he finally acknowledged the clip that had originally started going around the internet of Yachty disrespecting him, writing, “He wasn’t trying to take [my hard work away] from me[,] we just debating on camera[,] it got taken out of context..”

It’s unclear whether Lil Yachty and MitchGoneMad were able to completely settle their differences. However, Mitch’s response seems to be in the same direction. What did you think about this entire exchange? Who do you think was at fault?

She asked, Who was the best Fight? Claressa Shields’ Undercard in Detroit: Who was the best Fight

In the build-up to Claressa Shields’ WBC heavyweight title fight with Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse, several undercard bouts took place on DAZN.
Often times you hear about a preliminary match having the potential to steal the show or come close.
Sitting in the hotel earlier in the evening, two coaches politely disputed which undercard bout would do just that.
A local trainer and Christianne Fahey’s trainer both acknowledged great fights in the making between Fahey and Perkins as well as Russ and Shackleford. Two six round affairs.
The top half of the card was capitalized with the co-main event between Massachusetts junior welterweight Michel Rivera (26-1, 14 KOs) and Argentine Hugo Alberto Roldan (22-3-1, 7 KOs) in a 10-rounder.
Rivera won via split decision in a fight with nearly every round playing out similarly.
With “Ali” across the front of his trunks, Rivera boxed well and was the more polished of the two.
The southpaw Roldan was relentless in his efforts to hang tough over the duration.
Two judges rightfully scored the fight 98-91 and 99-90 for Rivera, while the third shockingly saw it 95-94 in favor of Roldan.
Few would argue that Rivera lost more than two rounds.  Roldan would touch the canvas late in the fight but made it to the final bell despite chants of “Ali” coming from the Detroit crowd.
Junior welterweight Julian Smith (9-2, 5 KOs) of Chicago, edged out favorite Shohjahon Ergashev (24-2, 21 KOs) of Detroit by way of Uzbekistan by a 10-round split split decision.
This fight was certainly the more competitive of the two split decisions finishes.
Smith, legally deaf, pressured the slick southpaw over the duration of the fight.  Ergashev, rated #13 by the WBC, picked his shots and maneuvered swiftly around the ring.
This was a true contrast of styles that can make judging more difficult at times.

Smith dropped Ergashev slightly after the bell sounded in the second.  Referee Benjamin Rodriguez clarified that the bell had already sounded.
Smith scored another knockdown in the fifth, while continuing to pressure and smother the fading Ergashev.
Scores of 95-94 x 2 for Smith and 95-94 were read as few argued Smith getting his hand raised.  It was a well earned victory in a competitive fight.
Pontiac, MI super featherweight Cameron Pankey (10-1, 4 KOs) shut out North Carolina’s Shaileik Paisley (4-5, 3 KOs) in a six rounder.
Pankey had to work for this one as Paisley hung in tough.
In a junior middleweight battle for Detroit, Josiah Shackleford (4-2, 2 KOs) defeated Gordie Russ II (6-2, 6 KOs) by unanimous decision over 6 rounds of thrilling action.
Shackleford started strong in the first and finished strong in the 5th and 6th, with some back and forth rounds in between.  Every round was competitive and as exciting as projected. Respect to both for putting it on the line in this thriller.
Scores of 59-55 across the board did not indicate the competitiveness of the match.

Dearborn Heights, MI junior middleweight Husam Al Mashhadi (10-1, 9 KOs) finished off Bruno Leonardo Romay (22-14, 19 KOs) in a battle of southpaws.
The explosive southpaw wasted no time stepping on the gas early and often, looking to impress the growing attendance.
Mashhadi scored multiple knockdowns with no answer in return aside from the rightful referee stoppage.
Pomona, CA junior welterweight Ernesto Mercado (16-0, 15 KOs) battered Argentine Hector Edgardo Sarmiento (21-3, 14 KOs) over three rounds of action of a scheduled ten rounder.
Mercado, a highly decorated amateur, had the height and youth on his side as he continued to climb the rankings.
Flint, Michigan native Jaquan McElroy (1-0) made his professional debut, defeating Travis Floyd (1-10-2) of Atlanta, Georgia over four rounds.
A veteran of 120-plus amateur fights and three national championships, the 154-lb McElroy recently inked a deal with Shields’ T-Rex Promotions.
Scores were 40-36 and 39-37 x 2
Samantha Worthington (9-0, 7 KOs) of Lexington, Kentucky dominated Hungarian vet Edina Kiss (16-21, 9 KOs) forcing a corner stoppage after the second round.

Another recent signee of Shields’ T-Rex Promotions, Worthington came out firing early on, leaving no room for Kiss to gather herself.

To start off the night, two female combatants looking to impress early arrivals and ringside observers did just that over six rounds of exciting action.
Houston-based, Brooklyn native Danielle Perkins (5-0, 2 KOs) slugged her way to a well earned unanimous decision victory over the durable and spirited Christianne Fahey (4-2, 3 KOs) of Scotland.
Rated #1 by the WBC at 175 lbs, Perkins was the mandatory to face Lepage-Joanisse prior to the announcement of Shields making the jump to heavyweight.
Fahey was off to a good start in the opening round shooting lead right hands to the head and torso of her southpaw opponent, seemingly edging out the round.
The next couple of rounds Perkins stepped on the gas and landed a series of heavy blows drawing blood from the nose and mouth of Fahey. She complimented that with good body work when the 6 ft tall UK native was against the ropes.
Fahey, now showing swelling under both eyes, caught a second wind in the fourth round and made a good fight of it over the last three rounds.
In the end, she was simply outgunned by a bigger and stronger fighter and will likely see much better days at a lighter weight moving forward.
Judges scores were 60-54 and 59-55 x 2.
DAZN’s broadcast team could have seen another round going in the direction of Fahey as a 58-56 verdict.
The two nearly locked horns at Friday’s weigh-ins, leaving no doubt that we would be in for a good fight.
Both combatants reciprocated with a smile and mutual respect as the final bell sounded, knowing they gave each other their best effort.
Perkins, a former St John’s basketball player and decorated amateur boxer, called for the Shields fight shortly after.
The two coaches debating on which fight would steal the undercard turned out to be the best two undercard fights.
Dmitry Salita Promotions’ Matchmakers Steve Clemente and Lina Kurylyuk filled the card well.
People certainly underrate undercards a lot of times. If you bought a ticket, it’s worth showing up when the lights turn on.
